Through the Shower and Shave Ministry to homeless men , the Revealed Beauty Ministry to homeless women, and the Blessed Baskets Outreach Ministry to the community, the homeless no longer have to leave their community to receive services that allow them to maintain their dignity as they work to rebuild their lives.
According to the Florida Department of Health (CHARTS 2016), Lee County’s population was 684,465 people with 125,860 (18%) under age 18. Of those under 18, 26% fall below poverty level, and 20.5% of families with children under age 18 are at 100% of the poverty level. Ten percent of the total population ages 5+ speak English less than very well, and 11% of children ages 0-17 are without health insurance. Potentially avoidable hospitalizations include asthma hospitalizations for 5-11 year olds and diabetes for 12-18 year olds. Diabetes is the cause of death for 47% of the black population, 16% of the white population and 31% of the Hispanic population.
Medically underserved children and families receive education on nutrition, healthy eating, and chronic disease management.
Chronic disease (diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol) is rampant in blighted underserved communities. The educational seminars equip people with information vital to preventing, managing, living with chronic diseases.
Families receive an array of screenings and services ranging from dental hygiene, eye exams, diabetes testing, hypertension and cholesterol. Additional because these diseases are silent killers, screenings are provided to detect and encourage people to know there numbers. Multiple hundreds of adults attend the seminars and are screened annually.
